Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the success rate of smoking stop over 1 month and its related factors of smoking patients in those days of admission to the Military Hospital. The survey by questionnaire was performed to 277 soldiers who stayed in 6 Military Hospitals for more than 1 month during March 2007 to present effective program for quitting smoking in the military hospital. The success rate of quitting smoking over 1 month was 63.5%. The average period of quitting smoking of successful soldiers was 61.28(¡¾3.1) days and the period of recurrent smoking of failure soldiers was 8.48 days (¡¾12.6) in average. The success rate of quitting smoking over 1 month was higher in the case of less dependent on nicotine(p<0.01), when study subject has difficulty to dispel stress without smoking and study subject has difficulty to associate with colleagues without smoking(p<0.05) and study subject has ¡¯making the change¡¯ stage among the stages of change model(p<0.01). The most decisive reason for success in non-smoking over 1 month was firm intention(29.0%), the 2nd reason was diverse incentives for quitting smoking implemented by the hospital (26.1%). The most important cause for failure in quitting smoking was stress (30.7%), the 2nd cause was unpreparedness for sudden quitting smoking after hospitalization(22.9%). 71.3% of soldiers responded that even though they failed in quitting smoking during hospitalization, they were willing to try again later. The most effective incentive for quitting smoking implemented by military hospital were prize for quitting smoking, prohibiting smoking at all areas in the hospital and sanction against smoking in order. In multiple logistic regression analysis, variables included the stages of change model were significant (p<0.01). Namely, it was analyzed that in the case of ¡¯making the change¡¯ stage, higher stage of the stages of change model in quitting smoking, better succeeded in quitting smoking than ¡¯contemplation¡¯ stage by 6.94 times and ¡¯preparing to change¡¯ stage by 6.75 times. Based on the results of this research, it would be important to provide systematic environment to patients for quitting smoking by setting all area in the hospital as non-smoking area and it might be necessary to apply systematic smoking stop program according to the stages of change model.
